Deer grow new antlers every spring and the first stage is the velvet stage. This deer antler velvet has been highly prized by Oriental Physicians for over 2000 years. In Chinese medicine, deer velvet has been used to improve bone health, to nourish the blood, reduce swelling, to treat skin disorders, and to treat impotence and female disorders. Koreans use deer antler velvet to treat anemia, impotence, to stimulate the immune system, improve heart function, muscle tone, lung efficiency, and nerve function. The deer antler is dried and used powdered or in tea form. A 16th century medical text also list the preparations in pill form and ointments.

After 2000 years the west is finally getting into the act. Scientific studies in New Zealand are now verifying the health benefits of this supplement. In laboratory studies of animals it is reported to have accelerated the body’s restorative processes and reduced liver damage in mice. Another study confirms this reduced liver damage. Deer velvet has shown some protective effects on cancer research. Deer antler velvet has shown an increased survival rate in mice exposed to radiation. Extracts of deer velvet have even shown reduction in tumor cell growth.

Some adverse reactions have been reported however. A possible interaction of deer antler velvet and morphine has been reported. An inhibited tolerance to multiple doses of morphine has been seen in mice. However it can possibly be useful in the prevention and therapy from the adverse reactions of morphine usage. Some websites are reporting the possibility that deer antler products being associated with the Chronic Wasting Disease. The Center for Disease Control has not found a relationship between deer antler velvet and any neurological disease nor Chronic Wasting Disease that affects humans.
